about the project.
The outdated kitchen in Nativi's community hall (vale ni soqo) poses significant health and safety risks, with malfunctioning sinks, leaky roofs, and limited space. The recent damage sustained during Cyclone Winston underscores its vulnerability to climate disasters. In its current state, the kitchen jeopardizes both daily activities and emergency response capabilities, warranting urgent attention to ensure the safety and resilience of the community, particularly the women who play a crucial role in its operation.
This project addresses structural issues, focusing on repairing sinks, roofs, and floors, expanding space, and reinforcing the overall structure. The renovation aims to create a safer cooking environment and establish a versatile space for post-disaster activities, fostering resilience against future climate disasters. Proposed activities include creating a building plan with representatives from every demographic in Nativi for an inclusive approach (alongside a certified architect), and the actual renovation done by the village men and youth (with the women preparing meals in support of the communal effort). Additionally, educational programs on climate resilience, sustainable building, and community safety planning will be conducted in the community hall, in collaboration with the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management (MRMDDM) and other climate-change-related NGOs.
The upgraded kitchen is anticipated to minimize health risks, streamline meal preparation (problems that worsened with the changing climate), and serve as a shelter option during disasters. Additionally, with the education component, this project aligns with both immediate needs and long-term resilience goals by teaching multiple generations about building sustainable infrastructure, creating plans for efficient disaster response, and creating a communal space for post-disaster support. While the kitchen is not being utilized in disaster response, it can be used as a community kitchen for bakers, cooks, and meat producers to create goods to sell in their business. If the youth group is successful in starting a local Chicken Hatchery, they can utilize the community kitchen along with the women in their business operations.
